Our Literacy Tutors ….

  • Work with a adult learner for a minimum of 2 hours per week using a learner plan that has been designed around skill levels and goals of the learner.
  • Meetings are expected to happen on a regular basis. The tutor and learner agree on time to meet.
  • In order to provide a sense of stability for the learners, we ask for a commitment of at least a year.
  • Respect the confidentiality and privacy of the learner.
  • Provide on-going updates on learner progress to NRLC staff as needed.
  • Let the NRLC staff know if you have any problems, questions or concerns OR if you and the learner are taking some time off, even for a short period of time.

What Skills do Tutors need?

  • An understanding of the needs of the learner and the challenges they have had in the learning process.
  • Able to listen to what the learner has to say and providing words of encouragement and support.
  • Patience and flexibility to support the learning needs of the learner. Some learners take longer to reach their goals than others.
  • Creativity in developing lesson plans to motivate and engage the learner.
  • Effectively work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Basic Computer Skills.
